Gillingham centre-back Max Ehmer praised the team’s character as they fought back to earn a point on Saturday.

But he did concede it was a game they should have won.

German defender Ehmer scored one equaliser but it needed another from captain Doug Loft, deep into stoppage time, to claim a point against relegation-threatened Colchester.

The on-loan QPR man said: “It is disappointing to let in two almost sloppy goals, but it showed great character to come back, especially to clinch it in the last minute.”

Ehmer’s goal in the 82 minute cancelled out George Moncur’s opener.

“At the time I felt like we could have then gone on and won it,” said the 23-year-old.

“I ran diagonally across the front of goal and flicked it behind me almost. It was a great ball by Lofty. I need to score more and hopefully win a few more games.

“It was disappointing to let in the goal afterwards and I personally thought it was off-side from where I was. Their player was infront of me and I am last man so it has to be off-side.

“That has gone in but we showed great character to come back and for Lofty to score in the last minute.”

While glad to have gained a point, Ehmer knew it was a game the Gills should have won.

Colchester started the game sitting second bottom in League 1.

He said: “We started off really well in the first half, for the first 20 odd minutes, but then went off the boil a bit. We rode it out to half time and came out again flying. It was up and down.

“If we were up on our game more than we were then we would have won.

“We should be winning those games and had we would, had we not let in two silly goals and taken more chances than we had.

“Their keeper did make some great saves.”
