Gillingham struck twice in the second half against Tonbridge Angels to book a place in the Kent Senior Cup semi-finals.

Michael Freiter opened the scoring and Charlie Webster’s late strike sealed the win.

Those goals were enough for a Gills XI to see off Ryman League Tonbridge at Priestfield on Monday night in the quarter-final tie.

The Gills fielded several senior players, including keeper Glenn Morris, former Angels player Leon Legge in defence and a strike pairing of Luke Norris and Antonio German.

Former Gills youngster Jack Parter captained the visitors.

German put an early effort into the side-netting for the Gills while Legge headed wide from a set-piece.

A crucial challenge from Devante McKain denied Royce Greenidge, following a poor back-pass from centre-back Legge.

German put a chance over the bar five minutes before the break and another into the side-netting from inside the box.

Tonbridge’s chance of scoring before the interval fell to Tommy Whitnell but he fired over.

In the second half Gills youngster Freiter put a chance wide early on for the hosts. Just before the hour Norris was denied by keeper Kyle Merson, after being put clean through.

The deadlock was broken on 65 minutes when Freiter converted a cross from Charlie Webster.

Joe Martin forced a save from Merson moments later while at the other end Gills keeper Glenn Morris kept out a shot from Flavio Tavares.

Frank Ngassa and Whitnell put efforts wide for Angels late on and it needed a goalline clearance from Norris to ensure Gillingham kept the visitors out.

Gillingham added a second with six minutes left to end Tonbridge’s hopes, with a close-range finish from Webster.
