Manager Steve Lovell happy for Callum Reilly to ponder new deal with Gillingham

Steve Lovell is happy to play the waiting game if it means Callum Reilly joins Gillingham.

Midfielder Reilly has been mulling over a contract offer after finishing last season on loan at Gills from Bury.

The 24-year-old is taking his time but boss Lovell has no problem with that.

He said: "It's something we're working on and hopefully we'll get it sorted out.

"Negotiations go on and they can become complicated at times but it's about the two parties working out a deal and trying to get it done.

"I don't know if he's got other options, all I'm interested in is what we've offered him.

"It's up to him and his people and his family to make the decision, which is a big thing.

"He's got to make sure it's right for his family, for his new wife, it's an important time for him and I respect that.

"Players have got to make the right decisions, to be happy, because there's no point signing for a club if you're not going to be happy and you won't get the best out of them.

"If he signs and he's happy then I'll be happy, so let's hope we get it sorted.

"There's no deadline. That's up to Callum now and his representatives to try and get things sorted."

Player-of-the-year Mark Byrne is still to commit his future to the club.

He's previously spoken of his desire to stay at Priestfield but, like Reilly, will not be pressured into a decision.

Lovell said: "He's taking his time over his decision because again he's got to make sure it's right for him.

"I've spoken to Mark and he wants to get it sorted out as soon as possible but again it takes time and these things can sometimes take longer than others.

"You've got to respect that and whatever happens, happens.

"If Mark Byrne signs for us, happy days. If he doesn't, there's nothing we can do about it."
