The former Welsh international had been first team coach at Gillingham for the past season and a half under Justin Edinburgh, before being told his services were no longer required.

Lovell was keen to get back into coaching and links up with his long-term friend Smith at Hayes Lane.

Smith said: “It is fantastic news to have Steve Lovell join the coaching staff. His experience will be invaluable this season.

“I have known Steve for over 20 years as both player and a coach. I cannot wait to start working with him ahead of pre season.”

Lovell, who scored 104 goals in 275 matches as a player for the Gills spent a short period as caretaker manager alongside Andy Hessenthaler, Mark Patterson and Darren Hare, following Peter Taylor’s sacking.

He has previously coached at Charlton and worked for Gillingham’s community trust before taking charge of the youth team at Priestfield.
