Manchester United away would suit Gillingham goalscorer Mark Byrne in round three of the EFL Cup

Gillingham goalscorer Mark Byrne hopes for an away trip to Manchester United in the third round of the EFL Cup.

equaliser at Watford on Tuesday night in the second round tie, which Gillingham won thanks to Bradley Dack’s extra-time winner.

England’s elite teams enter at the third round stage, meaning the Gills could land a dream tie in round three.

Byrne said: “Hopefully we get a good draw. I want Manchester United away please.”

His goal on Tuesday was one of his best.

He said: “There have been a few and I scored one or two last year but that was up there with the best. I like to shoot from distance but I wouldn’t mind taking ten tap-ins.”

Manchester United, Manchester City, Leicester City, Arsenal and Tottenham are among the teams joining at the third round stage.

Liverpool and Chelsea both came through their second round ties victorious, with wins over Burton and Bristol Rovers respectively.

Everton are also in the draw after thrashing Yeovil 4-0.

Gillingham's League 1 rivals Northampton also beat Premier League opposition on Tuesday night, seeing off West Brom on penalties.

The draw, which isn’t seeded, takes place after the Accrington versus Burnley match on Sky Sports tonight (Wednesday). Gillingham are ball number nine.

Round three games take place on week commencing September 19.

Gillingham were last in the third round during the 2005/06 season but after knocking Premiership side Portsmouth out in round two they lost to Doncaster in round three.
