Gillingham's Lee Martin will draw on experience if battle for League 1 safety goes to the wire

Lee Martin is confident Gillingham will avoid relegation having become a regular battler against the drop.

But he knows, whatever the outcome, the Gills have to improve.

He said: “I have been in this predicament throughout my career and never really been pushing for the play-offs. It’s always been the dogfight and I have come through. I am confident we will.

“We just have to cut out the stupid errors.”

Martin’s corner set up the first goal against Fleetwood but the Gills failed to build on that.

“Once we got the first we could have put the game to bed,” he said.

“We got a bit tired and they changed their formation with two sitting (in midfield). We have to see out games.

“Teams do it against us, they sit in for the last 10 minutes and don’t concede but we sit in and they break. All of a sudden they are down the other end scoring.

“It is poor but we have to go again.”

Reflecting on the mood in the dressing room after the defeat, the midfielder said: “We’re low and I think a point would have helped us out massively.

“The third goal was really poor but we have been doing that all season.

“We seem to concede really easy goals and we don’t seem to get those opportunities at the other end. It’s not good enough but we have to keep going because it might come down to the final day.”
