Former Gillingham youngster Mahlon Romeo has joined Millwall on a one-year contract.

The right-back was released by the Gills at the end of April after the two parties agreed to terminate his contract.

But the 19-year-old has quickly found a new club, joining a Millwall side who will be playing against the Gills in League 1 next season, following their relegation from the Championship.

Romeo had been on the books at Arsenal and Wycombe before joining Gillingham’s youth set-up in 2012.

His only senior appearance for the Gills came on the last day of the 2012/13 season when former boss Martin Allen fielded a young team against Burton.

He featured in Gillingham’s matchday squads four times this season following Peter Taylor’s exit but was an unused substitute on each occasion.

Romeo played a handful of games for Millwall’s under-21s towards the end of the 2014/15 season and will now join up with the senior squad.

He said: “Everyone has been really friendly here already and I'm delighted to sign for Millwall."

Fellow youngsters Josh Staunton, who was also released this season by the Gills, has been on trial with Charlton Athletic. He was in their travelling party for the Kent Senior Cup match at Priestfield on Thursday night.
