Striker Luke Norris wants frontman John Marquis back at the Gills, even if it makes his life harder.

Norris’ chances in Gillingham’s first-team were limited last season following the arrival of loanee Marquis.

The Gills face a battle with fellow League 1 side Millwall for the signature of

23-year-old Marquis and Norris hopes Priestfield is his preferred destination.

He said: “I am good friends with John and he has done well. I am delighted for him and hopefully he can stay. If you have competition in the forward places, it is definitely better. If you are there and nobody is competing, then maybe your game won’t be at its best.”

Millwall, who have offered Marquis a new deal, announced on Wednesday that talks with Marquis were still ongoing.

Norris scored a goal in each of Gillingham’s last two games, with his goal on the final day of the season against Notts County his first on home soil.

He said: “My away performances had been a lot better than my home performances and I spoke to the manager about it. I don’t know why it was that way."

Norris ended the campaign with seven goals and admits he took a while to get

going.

He added: “I started 13 league games, 16 all together, which isn’t that many. I would have liked to have started more. I got seven goals this year and 10 last. Hopefully, next season I can take it further forward.”
