Gillingham hung on for a point at Oldham on Saturday.

The Gills did little to threaten the home goal in the opening half but the game remained goalless at the break.

Hosts Oldham enjoyed plenty more second half chances but the Gills came away with a point.

Gills boss Peter Taylor named an unchanged team for the first time this season, rewarding the team who pushed Coventry close the week before.

With captain Doug Loft and vice skipper Danny Kedwell still out injured, Taylor continued to rotate the armband, with John Egan wearing it at Oldham.

The Gills had lost all three of their opening away league fixtures ahead of the trip to Oldham – with the hosts winning the last five meetings at Boundary Park.

Oldham bossed the opening half but Gills keeper Stephen Bywater didn’t have to exert himself too often, with Joseph Mills and Danny Philliskirk finding the arms of the visiting goalie.

Other chances from James Wilson, Liam Kelly, Dominic Poleon and James Dayton all went wide.

Gillingham took until the 45 minute to have an effort at goal themselves. Moments after Jake Hessenthaler had fired well over, Jermaine McGlashan directed a header straight at home keeper Paul Rachubka.

McGlashan’s chance from Joe Martin’s cross was the last action of the game.

Bywater was tested early in the second half, when he got down to deny Winchester and 10 minutes in he was at full stretch to turn Danny Philliskirk’s low shot wide.

With 25 minutes left the Gills switched personnel and formation, going 4-4-2, as Luke Norris joined Cody McDonald upfront.

Brennan Dickinson turned a Joe Martin cross goalwards soon after but the chances continued to come and go at the other end. Conor Wilkinson shot just over and Rhys Turner rolled the ball across the face of goal but nobody was there to tap it home.

A rare chance for Gills saw Cody McDonald’s cross/shot cleared before being replaced late on by Antonio German. Despite four minutes of added on time neither team managed to find a breakthrough.
