Gillingham striker Josh Parker says he can do better than his two-goal display against Rotherham

Two goals and a Gillingham win delighted Josh Parker, even if his own performance didn’t.

Striker Parker netted three minutes into the game at Rotherham and three minutes from time to top and tail a thrilling victory against a Rotherham side with promotion aims this season.

“I am happy to get two goals,” said the 26-year-old front-man.

“I wasn’t overly pleased with my performance, especially after the last game, which I thought was the best I have had this season.

“Two goals and the win is the most important thing, so for me, that overshadows my own personal disappointments.”

It’s the second time this month the Gills have beaten one of League 1’s leading sides, clinching back-to-back away wins. And Parker is loving the new-found freedom given by caretaker boss Steve Lovell.

He said: “We may not have had the majority of possession (on Saturday) but determination and hard work is the first thing you start with in football.

"You can have the best players in the world but if you have a team of players that want to work and roll their sleeves up then it shows what can happen.

“(The confidence) comes down to Loves and his coaching technique.

“As a manager you have your tactics and your formation but all he says to us is when we defend this is what we do but when you have the ball, basically do what you want, you are footballers, you are supposed to be enjoying it.

"If you are not smiling when you are playing, then you shouldn’t be here. You can see that.

“When there are issues on the pitch we sort them out but when we have the ball we basically do what we want.

“That’s the faith Loves has in us. Some managers might not like that. He believes in us and trusts us as players because he has been around us long enough to know what we are capable of."
