Gillingham boss Ady Pennock says club's League 1 safety should already be assured

Head coach Ady Pennock can’t believe the Gills still aren’t safe.

Gillingham’s destiny remains in their own hands following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Fleetwood, but they will be hoping Walsall do them a favour.

If Walsall can beat Gills’ relegation rivals Port Vale on Tuesday night then Pennock’s men will be heading to Northampton – managed by former boss Justin Edinburgh – on the final weekend with their League 1 status assured.

Any positive result for Vale and it will be another final day showdown for the Gills, who would still stay up with a win.

Pennock isn’t sitting comfortably with the fact that they are looking for help from afar.

He said: “We are worrying about other teams and Walsall have got to do us a favour on Tuesday night. I don’t sit comfortable with that.

“We have shot ourselves in the foot again.”

The Gills twice led Fleetwood on Saturday before succumbing to a late defeat.

“We should be well safe by now,” continued Pennock. “It’s late goals, concentration, fitness, you can put everything on to it, individual errors, team errors.

“I just feel uncomfortable because I am so disappointed that we have to rely on other teams, when really it should be wrapped up already.

“We are hoping nothing is on (the game at Northampton).

“We will have a Walsall scarf on Tuesday. I will most probably go and watch the game and be cheering them on, and we will go from there.”
