Positions are still up for grabs in Justin Edinburgh’s Gillingham team with a week to go before the League 1 season kicks off.

The Gills manager welcomed the prospect of having to make some tough choices and takes charge of their final pre-season outing on Saturday.

Portsmouth are the visitors to Priestfield in what will be Edinburgh’s last chance to watch his senior players in competitive action before the arrival of Sheffield United next weekend.

The manager, speaking after the impressive midweek display against Brighton, said: “I know a few positions in the team but there is food for thought, certainly after Wednesday’s game.

“If we get that level again on Saturday, then it is going to be a difficult week but I would rather it be difficult than easy.

“There are certain players I know that are pretty much pencilled in but there are some others I’m not too sure about.

“There are going to be some disappointments next Saturday but if you are disappointed, be it for the right reasons. We didn’t want to leave anything on the field in the two home (friendly) games.

“The squad are certainly going to be pushing one another for that starting place.”
