The game will now take place at Priestfield on Wednesday, August 22, kicking off at 7.45pm.

A statement from Sunderland said: “The change has been made due to the knock-on effect of Sunderland AFC’s Carabao Cup first round tie against Sheffield Wednesday being selected for live broadcast and moved to Thursday 16 August, 7.45pm and the subsequent home game against Scunthorpe United moving to Sunday 19 August.”

Sunderland are the clear League 1 title favourites, following their relegation from the Championship last season. They finished the season bottom of the table.

The last time Sunderland visited Priestfield they left with all three points, hitting four goals against the Gills without reply when they met in September 2004 for a Championship fixture.
