The Shouting Men: Gillingham striker Cody McDonald writes exclusively for the KM Group

I am off the mark now after scoring on Tuesday night and that will give me greater confidence to hopefully score a few more in the coming weeks.

I wasn’t getting too worried about not having scored but everyone else was making a bigger deal out of it than me. I know we are 10 games in but I have only started three of them.

I didn’t think I was going to get on to be honest. I was disappointed to not have started and once it got past the 70-minute mark and we were 4-1 up I was thinking, ‘no, I’m not going to get on’.

But with Rory Donnelly getting the booking, it probably helped the gaffer make his mind up.

It went well when I came on. I had a chance within seconds but, maybe looking back, I should have just hit it on my right foot. I tried to commit the defender and make it look like I was going to shoot. On another day, it might have worked.

A few moments later another chance came and I did score and it was a great feeling.

I didn’t feel pressure on me to score but I didn’t realise just how much people were waiting for me to get that first goal.

Stuart Nelson was relieved I scored as well! I turned around and thought, ‘what’s he running towards me for?!’ but credit to him, he is happy for me to get off the mark as well and came over to celebrate.
