The Shouting Men: Gillingham defender Harry Lennon writes exclusively for the KM Group

It was great to have recently extended my loan stay at Gillingham. The whole point of coming here was to play games and that’s what I’ve been doing.

Last Saturday was probably the biggest challenge I have had so far since joining as I was up against two physical players in Tom Pope and Leon Clarke. It was a good test.

I think the loan system is the best way to get experience and to make you ready for a future in the game.

I think those players playing at under-21 level will have a big shock when they realise what the Football League is all about. There is nothing better than playing for three points.

Sitting on the bench or playing under-21 football at Charlton wasn’t doing me any good.

Under-21 football is not like a proper league game. In some games I could go the whole 90 minutes without going up for a header. Everyone just lets each other play and it’s all too friendly.

Coming here gives me the chance to play proper football. It is much more physical and there are so many battles on the pitch. Everyone gets stuck in. It means a lot more playing for three points. It is a different feeling.

We got a win last weekend and we needed that after a few poor performances.

I was disappointed with the first goal which we conceded early. I should have cleared the ball more than I did with the header before the cross. But from then on we restricted them to just a few shots and I was pretty happy with how we defended.

I set up a goal for John Egan and in every game I have played I have got into the box and had a chance myself. When you have good delivery into the box you feel like you can score every time you go up.

I cleared one off the line at the other end, with the score at 2-1, and I was quite happy with that.
