Midfielder Josh Wright focused on Gillingham's survival bid amid transfer talk

Josh Wright is taking transfer speculation in his stride.

The midfielder – who tops the scoring charts at Gillingham with 13 – has recently been linked with a £100,000 move to Championship side Nottingham Forest.

It’s no surprise to see interest shown in the 27-year-old, after his phenomenal scoring form since January, scoring 10 in his last 13 games.

He said: “I have seen it (the speculation) but am focused on helping this football club stay in this division. This is where I am, this is where I am contracted and I have another year left.

“Every footballer has an ambition to play at the highest level they can. That is always something I have set out to do but I also have to be happy. That is why I am here. I am enjoying my time and long may that continue."

Gills are up against Wright’s former club Millwall this weekend and he can’t wait.

He said: “That’s the fixture I looked straight out for at the start of the season.

“It is always a fiery game and there is a bit of rivalry and a local derby. We know a lot of their players and they know us. It is always a game to look forward to and what a fantastic
occasion."

The Gills are in need of a lift. Wright had scored to get them back on level terms with MK Dons last weekend, in the last minute, but they conceded again to lose 3-2.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it and was shellshocked. I was angry and frustrated. It is bad to lose a game but to do it like that hurt big time and I didn’t know where to turn.

“I said a lot in the changing room after, I was angry, fuming. I was in shock. As bad as the first half was, we got back and could have had another point on the board.”

The Gills take on Charlton at The Valley on Easter Monday, the club Wright started his career with.

He said: “It’s another game I look out for and I haven’t been back to Charlton before to play them there since I left, for whatever reason. I missed the home game this year through suspension.

“I had some great years there. I came through and made my pro debut there and have a lot of time for the club."
