Gillingham manager Steve Lovell counting on midfielder Scott Wagstaff to take centre stage

Gillingham boss Steve Lovell believes Scott Wagstaff will have a big part to play for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old midfielder has suffered from a series of injuries this season but is back fit again after recovering from his latest spell on the sidelines.

Wagstaff has come off the bench in Gills’ last four games, providing the cross for the goal at Bury last time out. His contributions from the bench have seen him knocking on the door of a recall to the starting XI.

“He is close,” said Lovell. “He is a good player, there is nothing more we want than Waggy in the team, but the way we have set our team up at the moment, the ones we are up against, we have had to play a certain way.

“Waggy is a good lad, he has been out for a while and it is just nurturing him and getting him back, because he will have a big part to play between now and the end of the season.

“It is putting him in when the time is right.”
