Captain Josh Wright says his goals mean nothing if Gillingham are beaten

The thrill of scoring his first goal of the season was soon forgotten by Josh Wright on Saturday.

The Gills skipper put the Blues ahead in the first half but that good work was undone in the second, losing to Port Vale 2-1.

He said: “I was delighted with the goal but I would have rather not scored and won the game all day long. It’s about picking up points and winning games."

Wright’s goal came off the training ground, capitalising on a ball into the box from Cody McDonald after he was picked out from a Bradley Dack corner.

The skipper said: “It was another one we had worked on during the course of the week and credit to the staff and to Wayne Hatswell, the first team coach.

“It’s another one he’s worked on and we’ve scored a couple now.

“We are doing the work but just little things aren’t dropping for us. We have recovered from going down in games but we’ve not held a lead and that is the frustrating thing."

The Gills face Spurs on Wednesday in the EFL Cup but Wright insists the focus remains on the league.

He said: “It would have been a much better week going into the Spurs game with us getting a result at Port Vale.

“It is a nice one to look forward to but the priorities are on the league and next Saturday at home (against Coventry) is a game we will be going all-out to get the three points.”
