Large parts of Medway hit by power cut

Large swathes of Medway were hit by a power cut this afternoon.

EDF spokesmen said the problem, which occured at about 3.05pm, stemmed from the National Grid.

There have been reports of Rochester, Strood and Gillingham all being affected by the blackout with traffic lights turning off.

Power was returned after about 15 minutes. It is as yet unclear what caused the power cut.

A spokesman for the National Grid, said: "There was a short loss of supply from Kingsnorth substation, supplying the Medway area.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and a full investigation into the cause will follow."

Your report states that power has been supplied. We live in Ivy Street Rainham and have been without power since 1.15pm. EDF power cut line states that it is a problem with a High Voltage line. But I keep reading conflicting stories regarding the power cuts. Which one is correct?

I think the person who feels others are wimps is either living on another planet or is living in the past. Many people today run sensitive electronic equipment such as computers and power gitches and cuts can and do damage these devices.., and apparently there is no recourse with the power companies for compensation caused by these outages.

This power cut was extensive: I think we deserve an explanation from EDF, despite the short time.

There is no report in the KM online as yet!!

EDF phone line said the cuts reached from Sheerness to Croydon.

Was this due to industrial action at Kingsnorth?130

Our electricity Supplier (Southern electric) also was affected by this as well as EDF it seems.

Its amazing how much we depend on electricity i found. We couldnt use our cordless phone as without power, the base unit wouldnt respond. And my mobile had next to no battery which couldnt be charged to check what was happening.

Well done for service resuming promptly to the people concerned

My EDF supply was out between 3.05pm - 3.23pm (2nd July). Called the EDF Emergency number, only to get an automated response stating a widespread failure affect all areas of Medway, Gravesend, Sittingbourne...and other places too. At this time, there is no announcement on the National Grid website (http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/) nor is there any further details on the EDF website (http://www.edfenergy.com/). At least the outage only lasted around 20 minutes...instead of the +18hr plus EDF outage I had to endure on Easter Monday just gone. I remind people to claim compensation under the OFGEM Guaranteed Standards for poor performance...go to http://www.ofgem.gov.uk/Networks/ElecDist/QualofServ/GuarStandds/Documents1/GS%20additional%20links.doc for further details.
