Special schools meeting called

A special meeting has been called after insufficient time was allowed to answer questions from the public about plans to close three schools in Medway.

More than 40 questions were tabled for councillors during a full meeting of Medway Council on June 18, but only 22 were answered.

As a result Medway’s Labour Group has called for a special meeting of the council to be held at the St George’s Centre, Chatham Maritime, from 7pm on Tuesday, July 21, so the remaining questions can be answered.

Cllr Bill Esterson (Lab) said, "The Labour Group were appalled at the way the Tories tried to ignore parents and members of staff who wanted to ask questions about the future of their schools.

"We therefore called a special meeting so that the public can have their say about the plans and get answers to their questions. Those people who were not allowed to ask their questions were offered written replies but this is not good enough."

The Labour group will also be proposing at least one motion calling for the closures to be scrapped.

Cllr Les Wicks, responsible for children services at Medway Council, said: “At the last council meeting we answered as many questions as time allowed. All the questions raised have received a written answer, including those that were not answered verbally at the meeting, and thus every question now has an answer.

“Despite this, the Labour group have demanded that we repeat the Council meeting and answer the questions again and debate motions which are substantively the same."

    Chance to Save Good Schools

At the special meeting of Overview and Scrutiny on 8 June, I proposed the following.

"That the Cabinet be asked to scrap the decisions to consult on various proposals relating to All Faiths' School, Ridge Meadow Primary School, St John’s Infant School, St Nicholas’ Infant School and St Peter’s Infant School and discuss with the schools and others how to build on the good standards being provided."

All nine Tories at that meeting voted to close the schools as did all bar one Tory at the full council meeting the following week.

The Labour Group will propose the same at the special council meeting on 21 July. This will allow Cllr Wicks and his Tory friends the chance to think again about the damage they are doing to the reputations of five good schools. If the Tories support the Labour motion, then they will be agreeing to work with schools, parents and the local community. So far only one Tory, Cllr Baker has voted to support the schools. Well done to Cllr Baker. On 21 July, his Tory colleagues will have the chance to make the same sensible decision.

What is Cllr Wicks scared of? Being asked supplementary questions that he cannot answer because they are not on his crib sheet presumably.

    Insufficient Answers Cllr Wicks

Perhaps rather than whinge about the Labour Party and their desire to allow parents a voice in these proposals, Councillor Wicks might do well to actually listen to the arguments which parents and community groups are putting forward. These arguments are based on factual/reliable evidence and a demand for school places at good educational establishments, not short-sighted, misleading and unreliable information/statistics that the councillors are trying to purport as government-directed principles.

    Ignorance is bliss?

It is not enough that the individuals who asked questions get their answers. The councillors voting on the motion need to have the answers too. Surely Cllr Wicks can see the importance of a vote made with full knowledge of the issues and the facts?
