£1,000 for a tin of beans

Could this be the world’s most expensive tin of beans?

Michelle Gulliver was astonished when Tesco’s online shopping service tried to charge her £1,028 for a tin of Cross and Blackwell’s The Full Monty baked bean meal.

The married mother of two ordered the can of food, which normally costs £1.28, along with the rest of her weekly shop on Tuesday, June 16.

But she only discovered the severely inflated price when Tesco rang her to say her payment had been declined just hours before the delivery was due to arrive at her Borstal home on June 19.

Michelle, 29, of Mercury Close, said: “The lady said they only discovered the price for the tin when the bank declined my payment.

“In the end she processed my payment manually and my shopping was delivered at the proper price which was about £80 but when I looked at the Tesco website on Saturday, June 20, the price had not been altered so how many other people has this affected?

“It is funny but my only concern is if there had been enough money in my account the payment would have gone through and it would have taken me weeks to get it back from Tesco.”

A spokesman for Tesco said: “We are extremely sorry. This was an isolated error which was quickly spotted and resolved.

“We will be in touch to offer a goodwill gesture for the inconvenience this caused her.”

    Just one question

Just wondering, why did she not notice it firstly when buying the item and secondly on the checkout page it would have given the full amount so she had two chances to notice it.I agree Tesco is in the wrong for putting in the price but people have to be aware when shopping online and it looks clear that sadly this lady was not.Glad it got sorted out though.
