Armed Forces Day views

Hear from our reporter Alan Watkins and Falklands War veteran Simon Weston while watching the celebrations.

Armed Forces Day has been judged a success. The 30,000 lucky enough to get free tickets to the event at Chatham's Historic Dockyard seem to have had a great time.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown desribed it as a "wonderful day for a great community"

Veterans minister Kevan Jones said: "I would like to say thank you to Chatham and all the people who have helped make this such a fantastic day."

Readers have already been letting us know what they thought - former paratrooper Geoff Butler, who took part in the parade, said: "I think I can safely say that every veteran was totally stunned by the kindness and support we were shown.

"It made our day and we hope it made yours as well. We all walked away very proud. The people of Medway have set the standard to the rest of the country for future events and long may this standard continue. "

Marc Vigus wrote: "Such a great day out for all the family and a good way to say thank you for all the armed forces."

We'd like to hear more of your views on the day. Were you lucky enough to have a ticket or maybe you cheered as the parade went by. Let us have your comments below.

We would also love to share any pictures you may have taken. You can send those to medwaymessenger@thekmgroup.co.uk (good quality jpegs please).

There are six pages of reports and pictures in the Monday Medway Messenger, out now, and there will be an eight-page picture special in Friday's Medway Messenger.

In response to the comment above I would just like to say that everyone I know that attended the parade, and I know of quite a few, had a great time and were proud to be there. I was unable to go because I had to work but I am hoping they will go ahead next year as it sounded great.

I was unfortunate not to obtain tickets for this event, however I decided to follow the advise given online to view the parade and still be part of the celebrations. What struck me first was all of the rubbish and smoking bins were covered with plastic bags, apparently as a security measure. Secondly, no attempt was made to clean up any of the empty shops along the route. In addition to which, there was confusion about that, as speaking to one of the many Police on duty he was informed that the original route planned to go from the High Street into Military road and the Brook, was going to go the other side of the Paddock. (It did go past the Town Hall). I was also dissapointed with the parade itself, as it only lasted a few minutes withe very little enthuisiasim. In fact there was little in the way of atmosphere and due to the publicity given with regard to road closures I think many people stayed away. Come on Medway you gave more support to the Gills than this. Not everyone was fortunate to get tickets and those that attended the event in the Dockyard enjoyed it, but for those who didn't and came to support, left feeling very despondent.

We understood initially that this was an all ticket event that had sold out early and there was no point in even considering going along. It was only in the couple of weeks before the event that we discovered anyone could have taken part in the day's events. Oh well, perhaps something will be organised for next year even if the national event is taking place elsewhere. Talking of which, there was very little mention of the Dockyard being the main national focus of day on mainstream news and programming. Where was all the major TV coverage? Where was all the newspaper coverage? Our local paper {not talking about KM here)have only given it coverage on pages 6 & 7 with a few pictures and very few column inches of comment. This was a huge event for Medway and our armed forced deserve better even if the event itself was worth all the effort that did take place.

I took my brother and mother to the armed forces day. I was so happy when I received the tickets, and we had a fantastic day out, we all cheered as the veterans walked past in the parade and all the other armed cadets as well, we missed the drumhead service but the air displays and ground displays made it up. I like to say thank you for a wonderful day out. Even my mother enjoyed it, she loved seeing the army dogs in action. Brilliant.

I took my son 96) along - having served 16 years in the British Army - we had a wonderful day, just a shame the PA system was a little quiet and the Main Arena could have been larger as I missed out on the Parade and Drumhead Parade. But on the whole a thoroughly enjoyable feet aching day. Well done to all the hard organising behind the scenes which I know is immense in holding events such as these.
