Two fire crews were called to battle a
blaze at a building previously used as a nursery school.
Retained crews from Gillingham and Chatham were called to
Marlborough Road at 4.39pm on Saturday and left just over an hour
later.
No one was inside the building, which has been
completely burnt out. Maroon blazers, in the style of those worn by
marching bands, could be seen scattered across the grass near the
hut yesterday.
The hut, which measures about six metres by six metres, is between
the headquarters of 1039 Gillingham squadron of the Air Training
Corps and a building with signs for Spiral Arts, in an area
signposted the Marlborough Road Annexe.
Medway blogger Alan Collins said: “What did go up in flames was a
former kindergarten that has laid empty and derelict for
months.
“Youths have been going in and out of there regularly since it
closed so to hear about it going up in flames is hardly a
surprise.”
