David Cameron visits Medway

by Alan Watkins

The Conservatives unveiled their newest policy energy security today (Friday) in Medway.

Conservative leader David Cameron speaks at Gillingham's Sunlight Centre. Picture: Andy PaytonBut someone slipped up and forgot to tell the local press that leader David Cameron was coming.

A team of press photographers and reporters from the national media were told.

They and 130 workers at the LNG importation terminal at Grain were the only ones who heard Mr Cameron speak.

Mark Reckless, the local candidate, had been told of the visit yesterday but was under the impression the regional press officer was going to advise the media.

Today when contacted by the Medway Messenger the Conservative Central Office said their press officer was on leave.

They told our reporters that Mr Reckless - a Medway councillor - had been told of the visit and was supposed to tip off the press.

Asked by the Medway Messenger why local reporters were not told, he said: "I only heard last night.

"David was coming to Medway to launch our national energy security policy.

"Apparently our press officer was away.

"It was very interesting - the most significant thing was that we will remove the climate change levy from the bills and instead charge the supplier and producer according to the amount of carbon they produce."

    Point Scoring

Agree with Steve Simpson. It's unfortunate that once again the political reporting in the MM appears to be ever so slightly skewed against the Tories. I dare say that if Mr Cameron and Mr Reckless had walked on water across the Medway after the event, Mr Watkins would have said it was only because the Tories had allowed the river to become so silted up or some such.

I completely agree with Mr Osborne on this one!

It is starting to surface that none of the main parties are any good at anything! How a local party can be so unorganised baffles me!

The Tories are using Ashcroft's cash and are still in lala land, Labour seems to have fizzled away to claim the last of their expenses, and the LibDems are using imported candidates from Brussels!

    What a Lib/Lab/CON!!

    Lost Opportunity

Whereas I appreciate the disapointment of the press at not recieving the normal notice of the visit I am disapointed that the author could not have said more about the sucessful and cutting edge facility that was the purpose of the visit. Surley we shall have enough childish point scoring in the comming months without this ?

    Another Tory Mess

What a reckless mistake to make on the visit of David Cameron to Rochester & Strood.

What this shows is poor campaign management and organisation. It does not bode well for a Conservative Government if the Tories cant even get the basics right.

Medway tax payers are tired of ever increasing council tax for poor decisions. The Chatham two-way fiasco, Medway Tunnel purchase, demolition and destruction of heritage and the Tory proposal for an Estuary Airport which will reduce house prices across Medway.

It is a total mess locally.

The Tories need to get a grip.
