Video: Chatham and Aylesford election results

Medway turns a shade of blue

by Sarah Shaffi

Conservative Tracey Crouch will be celebrating her win with a party this weekend.

The Tory MP has been campaigning in the Chatham and Aylesford category for three years and says her hard work has paid off.

She ousted Labour's Jonathan Shaw, who had held the seat for the past 13 years.

Miss Crouch won the seat with a majority of 6,069, with 20,230 votets to Mr Shaw's 14,161.

She said: "I shall do my best to serve as Jonathan Shaw has done.

"David Cameron has fought an excellent campaign and tonight across the country we are seeing the results of that.

"Tomorrow the hard work begins. I promise to do everything in my power to bring the change we need."

Mr Shaw, who served as minister for the disabled and minister for the south east, said he would look back proudly on his time as MP.

He said: "It has been an honour to be the Member of Parliament for 13 years.

"During that time we have seen improvements in the NHS, public buildings and higher education in the Medway Towns.

"I am proud to have played my part in working together with a range of different partners to ensure those plans came to fruition."

Is this the same Jonathan Shaw who said in 1997 that if he only lasted one parliament but his political epitaph was that "He got rid of grammar schools" he would be well satisfied. Then he got a very junior ministership and never mentioned grammar schools again. His final political epitaph? "A pathetic trimmer who will not be missed."

Excellent result in difficult circumstances, as the boundary changes pushed up Jonathon Shaw's 'notional' majority.

Tracey is brilliant, and I am so pleased to have her as my new MP!

Interesting that Mr Christi now goes to westminster as a Tory MP, he began as an elected Labour Councillor and once in turned his colour to the tories. It is clear that he used the labour popularity to get into council and then changed to his true blue colours at the first opportunity.

It is clear to me that a candidate who switches party depending on which is most useful at a particular time cannot be trusted and is out for personal gain rather than to serve the electorate.
