People have been warned to stay in their homes in an area of Chatham following a firearms incident.

Armed police have been called to a house in Defiant Close, Lordswood, and are currently surrounding the property.

Police have also asked the public to avoid the area.

A spokesman said: "Road closures are in place round Swift Crescent and the public are being asked to remain in their homes at this time."

Witnesses reported a police helicopter and armed officers on the scene.

One resident watching from his home said: "There are an awful lot of armed police and police dogs.

"The police helicopter is also flying above. They aren't letting anyone near the scene or allowing people to drive past. The traffic is building up as they have closed Lordswood Lane."

The police has not released any further details.
