People said they were too young when they married but 61 years later Ellen and Cyril Rigby are still happily together.
And the devoted pair celebrated Valentine’s Day by receiving a bouquet to mark the fact that they are the oldest couple to attend their local Age Concern centre.
Ellen and Cyril Rigby were presented with flowers by Asda, Chatham
They chose the song Too Young for their wedding in 1953 as their way of showing everyone their love would last.
The couple, who live in Chatham, went on to have a son and a daughter, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
They met in London at an Easter fair when they were 15 and 16, but initially Mrs Rigby, now 80, liked 81-year-old Mr Rigby’s friend.
She said: “Then my friend didn’t like who she was with and we had a bit of a swap and I wasn’t sorry I changed my mind.”
Debbie Rowles, community life champion at Asda in Chatham, presented the couple with their bouquet.
They have been going to the Age Concern Centre for almost a year and the store is supporting the centre as part of its charity effort.
