The KM Bright Spark Awards encourage collaborations of pupils using cross-curricular skills in maths, IT, science and engineering to innovate and create.

The annual event takes the form of a Dragons’ Den-style format with students invited on stage to describe or show off their creation with the chance to win trophies and money can’t buy experience prizes. This week event organisers have added in a top prize of £500 to be awarded to the overall winners.

Three categories are available: innovation, investigation and invention. The event’s dragons will be made up of leading business people involved in the world of science and engineering.

To take part in the KM Bright Spark Awards visit www.kmcharityteam.co.uk and click on the schools link or click HERE. Entrants should include a photo of the group in action with their creation and can optionally include a link to a video detailing their entry.

Simon Dolby from the KM Charity Team which is staging the event said: “KM Bright Spark Awards is all about making science cool and providing an engaging challenge to excite students with practical science. We really want to see what students at both primary and secondary level are doing, whether it be simple coding or designing rockets.”

Prof Martin Warren, head of Biosciences at the University of Kent, said he was supporting the awards because “Science is so fundamentally important to everything we do in the UK. We’ve really got to be involved in this kind of process to invigorate our young pupils, to encourage them to get involved in science.”

Finalists selected to take part in the Dragons’ Den-style final will be filmed in advance in school to show the detail of the project. This is screened at the event before the dragons begin their questioning of students. The deadline to submit a nomination for the KM Bright Spark Awards is noon on Friday, June 5.

Partners supporting the event so far include the science faculty at the University of Kent, Integrated Technologies Ltd, Betteridge & Milsom Ltd, Discovery Park, Hectic Lifestyles and Kent and Medway STEM.
