The competition – open to entries from children and teenagers until November 7 – is offering a prize pot of £500 to the county’s top young cooks.

Backed by celebrities including BBC MasterChef host Gregg Wallace, Kent Cooks is the county’s official cookery contest for schools and families. Entrants aged between six and 19 years can select one of three categories; primary school, secondary school, or families for ‘adult and child’ teams which can include a parent, grandparent, guardian, teacher, or even school family liaison officer.

To enter, contestants complete a simple online form to capture recipe details plus a photograph of the child holding their signature dish.

The best entries will secure a place at an exciting MasterChef-style live final staged at East Kent College, Broadstairs. Youngsters will compete for framed certificates, goody bags, and £500 prize money to be shared between the category winners and overall Kent Cooks Champion 2017.

Event organiser Maxine Tarquini said: “We hope to encourage all ages to roll up their sleeves and have fun in the kitchen. Kent Cooks is a great excuse for families and schools to help children build confidence in their cookery while learning about healthy options and local produce.”

She added: “Getting to the final is a huge achievement and offers a once in a lifetime experience the young people will never forget.”

Contestants will be aiming to impress a judging panel of representatives from NFU Mutual, S.E. Medical, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes), Orbit, Benenden Hospital Trust, Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Chequers Kitchen Cookery School, Licensing Consultancy Services, Suzanne Howe Communications, FFK Catering, The Southern Co-operative, Whole School Meals, and Brakes.
