One hopeful contestant is Whitstable schoolgirl Millie Taft from St Mary’s Catholic Primary. The seven year-old is preparing char grilled chicken arriabata for the primary school category.

Millie’s mum Andrea said: “She really enjoyed making her own dish and is so proud of how it turned out. The food not only looked good, it tasted delicious too!”

Event organiser Nancy Clark of the KM Charity Team said the Kent-wide competition aims to create a real buzz around cooking.

She said: “We’re expecting entries from youngsters aged five to 18 and points will go to submissions that show creativity and an awareness of healthy living.

“Children who have special needs can take part in the families category, which requires adult-and-child entries and has no upper age limit.”

Kent Cooks is sponsored by Brakes, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Golding Homes, DFDS Seaways, Orbit South, Kent Cookery School, VooServers, Southern Water, Carefree Comms, Licensing Consultancy Services and Mini Babybel.

The deadline for entries is November 4 and a Masterchef-style final will be staged on November 27 at East Kent College.
