From construction to the cat walk

This weekend’s KM Charity Walk might be a great way to enjoy England’s flora and fauna – but some rather more exotic creatures will benefit from the funds raised by Glosrose.

And there are still places left for bookings this morning - until noon - or people can turn up on Sunday and pay on the day.

Hollingbourne firm Glosrose Engineering is supporting the walk for the second year running, and staff will be taking part in aid of Smarden’s Big Cat Sanctuary, which breeds endangered species on its 32-acre grassland site in Headcorn Road.

Its inhabitants include leopards, snow leopards, tigers, lions, lynxes, cheetahs, pumas and jaguars – a world away from Glosrose’s normal area of expertise as suppliers of mechanical handling and construction equipment.

Managing director Russ Butcher explains: “We’ve been involved with the Big Cat Sanctuary for more than 15 years and we do quite a lot for them.

“We like our staff to be involved in supporting charities.”

The Big Cat Sanctuary is run by the Wildlife Heritage Foundation and its work is part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme. As well as looking after more than 50 cats, it also helps conservation projects overseas.

The KM Charity Walk takes place this Sunday, June 24 and takes walkers through beautiful countryside and villages on the outskirts of Maidstone.

Walkers can choose either a five-mile route through Downswood and Otham, or a ten-mile route through Leeds, Broomfield and Langley Heath, skirting the grounds of Leeds Castle.

Both routes start and end at Grade II listed mansion Mote House in Maidstone’s Mote Park and are suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness - and dogs on leads are welcome to join in.

Children will be able to follow a nature trail designed by Kent Wildlife Trust and take part in craft activities at the summer fayre staged at the finish line. There will also be a barbecue, food and drink stalls – including Simply Ice Cream, Homemade With Love Cakes and Priscilla the Pimms Pod – and music from Kent band the Acoustic Tones.

The KM Charity Walk is supported by Berry Gardens, Simply Ice Cream, Jarmans Solicitors, Maidstone Ramblers, and The Woodstove Trading Company.

To book online before 12 noon, visit www.KmCharityWalk.co.uk and use the SUPERSAVERCW18 discount code to get adult tickets for just £5 each.

Or just turn up and pay on the day at a cost of £15 for adults and £2 for under-16 year-olds.

Check-in is between 8am and 10am at Mote House. The walk officially begins at 9am.

The KM Charity Walk is one of many challenge events staged annually by the KM Charity Team including the KM Dragon Boat Race on July 1, and new to 2018 the Zombie Charge on October 28. Visit www.KmCharityTeam.co.uk/Booking and use the discount code KMNEWS18
