The record-breaking wine and wisdom evening, now in its 13th year, raised £4,000 for good causes in the town, including the Kentish Express newspaper's Charity of the Year – Ashford Volunteer Centre – as well as children’s literacy and road safety initiatives.

Quiz team Moomins won the annual event for the third time in four years scoring 66 points, an impressive 94 per cent of correct answers, and beating We Love Fine Ants by two points. Stargazing Across the Quizziverse and PB Aces made up the final places in the top four who will represent Ashford in the county final of the KM Big Quiz to take on top teams from the Canterbury, Maidstone and Medway heats.

An on-the-spot prize of a pair of Eurostar tickets was won by Derek Spells from the Moomins who correctly answered that the colours associated with the British Suffragette movement were green, white and purple.

Two major companies played a leading role in staging the event with Shepherd Neame stocking the charity bar and volunteers from Barclays bank in Ashford manning the bar and supporting the raffle and Heads and Tail game.

As well as the Ashford International Hotel the event was supported by Specsavers, Hallett and Co, Office Angels, Hornby Visitor Centre, McDonalds, Eurostar, Independent Music Productions and DFDS ferries.

Delicious team names make quiz host’s day

A feature of the KM Big Charity Quiz are the witty team names dreamed up by captains attending the event.

Quizmaster Simon Dolby said: “Quiz team names are often linked to the organisation of their teammates, occasionally are designed to try and trip me up as they are tongue twisters and often are simply fun and wacky – it always makes me chuckle to see what has been dreamed up.”

Mr Dolby’s favourites this year were: Tequila Mockingbird from Hallett and Co, Vicious and Delicious, the tongue twister Ken Dodd’s Dad’s Dogs Dead and We love Fine Ants.

What would your family or work colleagues use as their quiz team name? Send in your answer, also stating why, to charityteam@thekmgroup.co.uk and you could win a prize.
