Working with teachers all day, every day gives an insight into the realities of the profession – and the level of inventiveness teachers sometimes have to draw on to get children learning.

Which is why, with just three days to go, Reed Education is urging schools to get their last-minute nominations in for the Kent Literacy Awards, which celebrate creative and innovative ways of developing children’s reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

As well as receiving their awards at a ceremony in the summer, the winners will have their achievements publicised across the county in a booklet sent to every school in Kent, Medway, Bexley, and Bromley, describing their good work so that other schools can be inspired, too.

Any primary or secondary school in these areas can enter and there are a wide range of categories looking for initiatives using IT, drama, art, debate, poetry, competitions, special events - and much more - to successfully engage the children.

The deadline for entries is noon this Friday, April 27. Winners will be invited to a ceremony at the Hempstead House Hotel in Sittingbourne in June.

“I’ve been in education recruitment in Kent for 12 years and teaching is also in my family. All the people that work for me have some kind of connection to the education world, so we are thrilled to be part of the judging panel,” said Alison Whitmore, executive business manager at Reed Education in Maidstone.

“We always feel that as well as helping schools with recruitment, we should also become involved with things like the literacy awards. It means we are involved with something vital – the reading, writing, and listening skills that children are honing in schools throughout Kent.”

The Kent Literacy Awards are also supported by Kent County Council, Medway Council, Tribeca Technology Group, KM Facilities Management Group, Beanstalk, Orbit, London Borough of Bexley, McCabe Ford Williams, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes), Whitefriars, and DDS Environmental.
