Physically demanding but fantastic fun! That was the verdict of volunteers trying out Water Walking spheres in advance of a fund-raising event to support Pilgrims Hospices in East Kent and Kent Walking Bus

A dozen people, including lifeguards from Herons pool where the charity event will be staged on Saturday, March 14, tried out the spheres to help finalise arrangements for the big day.

The latest challenge to be dreamed up by fund-raisers at the Kentish Gazette and kmfm charity team involves participants stepping inside a giant hamster ball and trying to walk, run or roll the length of a swimming pool.

The test proved that balance, not strength, is key to being able to move the giant spheres across the 25m length of the pool. Participants said 3min in the sphere felt like a 30min work-out in the gym, but so much more fun.

Most tumbled their way along but some tried the tip-toe approach with small steps. Either way those emerging from the spheres felt exhausted but exhilarated at the experience.

Everything is now set for participants signing up for the charity fund-raiser in March. To take part participants must pledge to raise a minimum of £75. This charity event is for adults only and there is a maximum weight restriction of 15 stone. To apply for a pack cut out the form in the Kentish Gazette or Extra newspapers or go to www.kentishgazette.co.uk to apply online.

The event is appropriate for individuals or teams as three spheres will be in the water at any time. Teams of friends can race each other in the water walking challenge.

Organisers stress that participants will not get wet and can wear shorts and T-shirts in the sphere. Swimming costumes are not needed.

The event will take place from 2pm to 5pm with a maximum of 90 participants. Photographer Stuart Blackledge will take video footage free of charge for participants that wish it which will be added to to the KM Charity Challenge YouTube site. This will enable participants to view it, add it to their Facebook page and send the clip to their friends, both to promote their involvement and future charity water walking events.

Event sponsors are needed with organisations benefiting from considerable profile through KM Group newspapers, kmfm radio and web sites.

Water Walking firm Chillout 'n' Challenge, Herons pool and Argyll Insurance have all agreed to sponsor the charity event so far. To discuss this contact Simon Dolby on 07989 164 752.

A commercial children's water walking session will take place at Herons on Monday, February 16 during school half term. For information and prices contact the pool.
