Family in Sandwich is taking over Delf Farm Shop

A family in Sandwich with fruit and vegetable growing “in their blood” have just taken over the Delf Farm Shop.

Alison Cock, 37, and her family reopened the premises on Friday.

Mrs Cock was previously a cleaner in Sandwich but says it has always been her dream to run a farm shop.

She said: “I’ve been brought up with fruit and veg and farming with my family. It’s in my blood. I’ve always dreamed of having a farm shop and a garden centre.”

Her first part-time job, aged 13, was working at a farm shop and now she wants to see her new venture in Deal Road going back to traditional ways and growing produce on-site.

She said: “It will be great to start producing for the farm shop. We’re going back to old-school ways with the vintage tractors and machinery.”

The tractors come from husband Simon, 38, who collects retro machinery and will plough the fields and do maintenance.

The couple, who live in Dover Road, Sandwich, have two children, Thomas, 16, and Katie, 13. Both are pupils at Sandwich Technology School, and will help out when they can.

Mrs Cock’s parents, Mick and Linda Beer, will be growing produce in the greenhouses and have helped to set up the shop.

Mr Beer, 67, said: “We are doing it all together and we’re really proud of Alison. It’s lovely to see it all coming together.”

He has nearly 40 years’ experience in the fruit and vegetable industry and came out of retirement to help his daughter.

The family want to see the farm shop transformed by Christmas.

Mr Cock, who runs Allscreens, in Sandwich, said there would be a new gate and fencing, as well as making more use of the site.
