New faces on Sandwich Town Council after election

There will be some new faces on Sandwich Town Council now that the results of the election have been announced.

It was announced on Monday after residents cast their votes on Thursday last week.

Cllr John Bragg received the most votes in the Sandwich North ward with 885, newly elected Michael John Holloway closely followed with 827.

Mr Holloway said: “I’ll fight tooth and nail over the next four years to get those responsible to sort out Sandwich’s traffic and parking problems. This needs to be part of a wider plan for the town and surrounding area that encourages business and tourism regeneration so that our communities thrive - Sandwich justifies a “wow” factor.”

Jeremy Watts, Veronica Liote and Jacqueline Dunay retained their seats and three new councillors were elected including Charles Miller (Cons), Carolynne O’Donoghue (Lib Dem) and Christopher Trim (Cons). Cllr Trim previously lost when he tried to join the council at the by-election last year.

Sandwich South saw Cllr Jeff Sneller (Cons) lose his seat with just 437 votes.

Paul Carter, Richard Daw, Paul Graeme, Mark Moorhouse, and Joe Trussler (Cons) were all re-elected. David Wood (Lab) was also re-elected after securing his seat at the by-election last year.

Independent Jeffrey Franklin will now sit on the council after securing 454 votes. John Gisbey (Cons) was also elected for the first time with 445 votes.

Cllr Trussler and Cllr Wood obtained the most votes for the South ward with Trussler on 535 and Wood 533.

This means that Sandwich is still Conservative-led with six new faces out of 16.

The turn-out for the north ward was 78.28% and 72.28% for the south ward.

Not standing for the election was Pip Russell, Sue Laslett, John Scollard, Brian Scott and Bernard Butcher.
