Thieves broke through a wall and into the Subway store in Ramsgate Road, Sandwich

Thieves broke through a wall and into the Subway store in Sandwich in an attempted burglary.

It is not sure how exactly they got inside but the intrepid thieves created a large hole in the brickwork, through the plaster and into the fast food chain’s kitchen.

It happened between 2am and 3am on Monday, November 23, at the premises in Ramsgate Road, Sandwich.

Store manager Roberta Maunton said: “They literally smashed through all of the wall and through to the store.

“We are taking a few extra precautions at the moment in case they come back.”

This isn’t the first time this has happened to the store, which is part of Richborough Service Station on the Sandwich bypass.

A couple of years ago thieves broke through the wall in the exact same place.

Miss Maunton said: “We have been broken into since then but they used different methods of getting in. We have got a better security system and a bigger safe that’s a lot heavier.”

This meant that the thieves could not lift the four tonne safe and abandoned it, leaving with no money at all.

Last time the burglars made off with the whole safe worth anywhere between £1,000 and £6,000, with at least £750 in cash.

The store was able to open as usual on Monday after a tidy-up but the repairs to the wall is estimated to be very expensive.

Police officers are investigating the burglary and are reviewing CCTV footage.

Enquiries are on-going and officers are asking for any witnesses to contact Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting ZY/037173/15.
