Sandwich Town win Kent indoor title after beating Canterbury in final to move closer to Lord's final

Sandwich Town are Kent’s indoor cricket representatives about to tread the long road that, if they keep winning, leads to a final at Lord’s on March 15.

Already Thanet League champions, Sandwich claimed the county title with three conclusive victories - the last over Canterbury - in the county six-a-side competition at the Ames Levett Centre.

And they will be back there on Sunday morning to meet Preston Nomads (Sussex) in the ECB regional play-off.

Sandwich virtually strolled into the county final by beating Newington (Swale) by 86 runs and Betteshanger (Dover), dismissed for 47, by 65. In the process Ryan Davies (39) and Alec Smith (35) were the respective top scorers.

Canterbury’s progress on behalf of the Pharon League was even more emphatic. They needed only 64 runs to defeat Folkestone (Shepway) by three wickets.

Then, to further underline East Kent clubs’ supremacy, they stormed to 170-2 in a one-sided semi-final with Wateringbury (Maidstone).

Max Campbell drove five sixes (three of them in one over) in his 54 not out and he, Ben Cooper and Freddie Hulbert each took two wickets as Wateringbury were routed for 33.

Sandwich were all-out for 83 in the final before successfully defending it.
