Sevenoaks woman Liz Lewis is preparing to shave her head for Breast Cancer Care

A Sevenoaks woman will be shaving her long, blond locks off in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

Liz Lewis has had long hair for as long as she can remember, but is braving the shaver in a bid to raise money for the charity.

The 64-year-old has already raised £1,500 and hopes this figure will rise on Saturday when she heads to Sandals hair salon in Dynes Road, Kemsing.

All of the funds raised will go to Breast Cancer Care and Mrs Lewis will be donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust - a charity which makes wigs for young children in the UK and Ireland who have had cancer treatment.

The event, planned for 10.30am will be recorded by the brave volunteer's husband, Alan, and uploaded to YouTube.

Mrs Lewis said: "I chose to fundraise for Breast Cancer Care because five close friends and family members have been diagnosed with breast cancer and I have witnessed first-hand the devastation it can cause. As a woman, I can’t imagine having to go through such a debilitating illness and in some cases losing your hair. I hope this charity shave will help fund much needed support for those diagnosed with the disease in the future."

"The funds raised will help Breast Cancer Care make a huge difference to the lives of thousands of women waking up to the harsh reality of breast cancer every day. Thank you Liz” - Alec Raven, Breast Cancer Care

Penny, the hairdresser who will be carrying out the cut, is looking forward to it. She said: "This is the first time we have done this and I am delighted to be involved. It will be my first time so I am planning my best close shave."

The money raised will go towards Breast Cancer Care’s vital support services, such as the charity’s helpline, online forum, information points in hospitals and face-to-face services.

Alec Raven, head of community fundraising for Breast Cancer Care, added: “Every year in the UK, 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. We want to be there for each and every one of them.

"That is why we’re so grateful to Liz for all the hard work she has put in to organizing this event.
