Bungling raiders attacked an Edenbridge supermarket with sledgehammers in a bid to steal a cash machine.
A brick wall at Waitrose, in Mont St Aignan Way, was damaged - but the ATM had not been removed and no money was taken.
Police arrived and a white Volkswagen Transporter van was spotted driving away from the scene, but the vehicle was lost a short time later.
Detectives have today released details of the attack, at about 11.40pm on Sunday, August 17.
DC Nick Brown said: "Although this offence happened late at night, we are hopeful somebody saw something that might aid us in our inquiries.
"If you know anything at all, please do not hesitate to get in touch to help ensure those responsible are brought to justice."
Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to phone DC Brown on 01474 330514, quoting crime reference YY/16689/14, or Kent CrimeStoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
