Sevenoaks: The Granville School ensures place in 'Kent is Delicious' cooking competition

A Sevenoaks school has been named as one of four finalists in a Kent cookery competition.

'Kent is Delicious' aims to raise children's awareness of the quality and importance of local, seasonal produce.

Open to all primary schools in Kent, this year children were asked to create a tasty packed lunch using ingredients grown, produced or farmed locally to them.

The Granville School, off Bradbourne Park Road, ensured its place in the final by impressing the selection panel with a 'May Bread Lunch'.

It included seasonally-inspired May vegetable bread made using eggs from the school's hens, locally grown rhubarb, apple flapjacks and Kentish apple crisps.

The competition is organised by the Diocese of Canterbury's Communities and Partnerships Framework.

It is held in partnership with the Kent Agricultural Society, Produced in Kent and Kent Farmers' Market Association.

Caroline Pinchbeck, director of the communities and partnerships framework said The Granville School's entry had shown a lot of thought and understanding.

She added: "The judging panel were very impressed at the tremendous amount of work and creativity in the entry and particularly liked the idea of the apple crisps.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the standard of entries to this year’s competition, and it’s by far the highest number of entries we’ve had. It’s clearly provoked a lot of thought, and fun, among the schools who have taken part and we want to wish all our finalists the best of luck."

The three other schools which will take part in the final are: Herne C of E Junior School in Herne, Christ Church C of E Junior School in Ramsgate, and St. George’s CEP School Wrotham.

The hotely contested foodie final of 'Kent is Delicious' will take place on Friday at the Kent County Show in Detling.

All the finalists will make their dishes at the show and will have them tasted by an expert panel of judges made-up of local food producers, chefs and farmers.

Schools can already start thinking about their entry for next year’s competition which in 2016 will be about creating a tasty, locally sourced after-school snack.
