Sue Quinn from The Granville School, Sevenoaks, has won a national teaching competition launched by K'NEX

A teacher from a school in Sevenoaks has been crowned the first winner of a national competition.

Sue Quinn, who teaches at The Granville School, was the March winner of the new Teachers Build Futures campaign - after being entered by Year 6 pupil, Lucy Tansley.

The national contest was launched by construction toy company K’NEX, with the equipment being used in classrooms across the UK to engage primary school pupils with Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths.

Students nominate their teachers, who are said to make learning fun.

Lucy entered Mrs Quinn because she said she is: "a brilliant teacher, who encourages us to ask questions about everything and anything that makes us curious.

"I used to find science boring but thanks to Mrs Quinn, I’ve come on so well that I’m a science prefect and I think science is amazing in every way."

The winner was presented with the news at a school assembly, along with toys that her Year 6 class can enjoy building as a team.

Commenting on her win, Sue Quinn said: "I’m not often speechless but when I found out I’d won the competition, I was lost for words. Pupils like Lucy Tansley are the reason I have been teaching at The Granville School for 20 years.

"She’s a joy to teach, an absolute sponge for knowledge and I’m humbled that she wanted to nominate me. Although I’m leaving the school later this year, the words in Lucy’s nomination will remain with me for years to come."

The competition runs from March until July this year, to nominate for the next Teachers Build Futures, visit the K’NEX UK Facebook wall, tweet @KNEXUK or email teachersbuildfutures@knex.com.
