Westerham: Staff racially abused during supermarket theft

A man has been arrested in connection with an investigation into racist abuse and shoplifting at a supermarket.

It was reported that on January 3 a person attempted to steal items from the Co-Op in Westerham's High Street. The suspect was challenged by staff before it is alleged he assaulted one of them and also racially abused colleagues. He then left the store.

On Monday inquiries by Kent Police led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man from Swanley on suspicion of using racially aggravated language, shoplifting, and assault. During the arrest, the suspect is also alleged to have assaulted a police officer. He remains in custody.
