Chalk marks left across Sevenoaks district, including in Shoreham, Church Street and High Street, may be burglary threat

Police have warned that chalk marks spotted across Sevenoaks could be symbols used by criminals.

The markings have been made outside homes across the district.

A spokesman for Kent police said it was possible the markings may be a prank or have been left by children, but could also be an indication of potential criminality.

Different methods of chalk marking can be used by offenders to pinpoint properties as targets for crimes. A number of pink crosses have been reported in Shoreham, on pavements in Church Street and the High Street.

Sergeant James Joyce, of the Sevenoaks community safety unit said: "We do not want to alarm residents and there is no evidence at the moment to suggest the markings are an indication of anything sinister. However, it is important that people remain vigilant and ensure their homes are left properly secured when unattended."

He added if people see any such marks or symbols they should take a photo, wash them away and call the police immediately.

Residents should keep their eyes peeled for any marks or symbols which appear to have been deliberately left outside. If you do see anything suspicious take a photograph, wash the chalk away and call police immediately.
