Hogben, formally of Bentley's Meadow, Seal, followed Mr Turner before striking him from behind without warning - causing cuts to his neck - and fleeing the scene.

The 23-year-old was arrested soon after but refused to comment in a police interview.

Investigating officer Det Con Jeremy Taylor described the incident as a cowardly and vicious assault and said Mr Turner was lucky to escape with his life.

DC Taylorsaid: "The victim sustained numerous cuts to his neck which required treatment in hospital and I don’t doubt he has also suffered some serious long lasting mental scars.

"I hope this sentence serves as a warning to others as to the gravity with which the courts view such offences, especially where glasses are used as weapons."

Appearing at Maidstone Crown Court Hogben was jailed for three years and nine months.

He had previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £120.
