Concern as travellers in a field on Platinum Way, St Mary's Platt

Residents have voiced their concerns after a group of travellers have moved into a field in St Mary's Platt, near Borough Green.

Roughly 6 caravans turned up at around 8pm on Thursday night, and local people have reported that more have been arriving throughout the night.

Kent Police sent a patrol car out in the early hours of this morning, at around 12.30am.

The land is on Platinum Way in the village, a grassy area which is going to be used for a memorial hall and a new proposed school - where building work is due to start later this year.

A villager said "They have bashed down a fence and broken into the school field, the police came out after midnight and took vehicle details."

The travellers were said to be 'gesturing' to onlookers, and their dogs were 'running riot' on Thursday evening when they arrived in caravans, a pick-up truck and Ford Transit vans.

Another concerned resident, who did not want to be named, commented: "There are loads of travellers, it's such a busy road and it's dangerous the trouble they are causing.

She added: "There are lots of schoolchildren near by and they have set up camp in fields."

A spokesperson from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council said "The Council is not involved in any enforcement action in respect of this encampment, as the land is in private ownership.

"We are however endeavouring to ascertain and contact the owners of the land to make them aware of the encampment."

The land is reportedly owned by Rydon Homes, who have been approached for a comment.
