It is unclear at this stage how Mr Cox died.

A statement released by his former school, Sackville School, said: "It is with the greatest sadness that we share the awful news of Matt’s sudden and untimely passing.

"Matt was above all a true gentleman. Helping others made him happier than anything else, as is clear from the flood of tributes on Facebook. Nothing was too much trouble for him, and he seemed to spend as much time helping others achieve academic success as he did on his own studies.

"He could also always be relied upon by staff to help out around school, and many a prospective student will have benefited from one of Matt’s tours of the school. His maturity and politeness invariably impressed all of those he met. We know he had a great future ahead of him.

"Matt will be sadly missed by the whole community and our thoughts are with all his family."

Mr Cox, a keen sportsman previously kept goal for the school's football team and played for both Estcots and Halsford Lions before that.

Edenbridge Cricket Club has also paid tribute to the young student who was working at Waitrose throughout the summer.

A statement said: "We would just like to say a big thank your for all your messages of condolence & for the lovely flowers. The sudden loss of Matthew will be hard to bear for us all.

"He loved playing cricket for Edenbridge, wore his cap with immense pride and so enjoyed playing with you all. He would have been so disappointed to have missed the cup final. Please remember him ripping out stumps and smashing fours through mid wicket with his favourite shot.

"The thought of no longer being able to play in the same side as him rips me apart, but I have all those memories from the last few seasons when we did play together to sustain me though the long winter. Thanks to you all. From Tim Linda & Dan."
