A man has been charged over an armed raid on an amusement arcade on the Isle of Sheppey.

Gary Grannells, 25, is accused of robbing Mr G's in Leysdown on Saturday.

He is also charged with assaulting two male police officers, who suffered minor injuries and were treated in hospital before returning to duty.

Grannells, from Notting Hill, London, appeared before Maidstone magistrates today, where he was remanded in custody until Friday, July 19.

He was arrested yesterday by officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate in Wembley.

Kent Police said investigations are ongoing into the raid at Mr G's, off the Promenade, at about 12.15pm.

One of the raiders is said to have swung a large axe at a female member of staff while a second raider, believed to be carrying a snooker cue, looked on.

It is believed a third man was the driver of a black BMW getaway car who waited outside the premises.

The force's helicopter and police on the ground, including armed officers, searched the area and found the car in Cheyne Road, Eastchurch.

Mr G's general manager Barry Moss said the raiders entered the arcade via a side door in the over-18s section of the building.

They demanded cash from the safe and escaped with around £3,000.
