A security guard has released his first solo music video to make a “better life” for his daughter.

Carl ‘Roomah’ Smith, of Jefferson Road, Sheerness, has launched Back Then under the label Red Flashmedia.

The 28-year-old says his passion for music started when he was five after listening to an album by American rapper Red Man.

He also enjoys music by Klashnekoff, Skinny Man and Eminem.

His new song is about his life growing up on the Mawbey Brough Estate in Lambeth, and the music video shows images of the area.

The dad-of-one said: “I wanted it to represent where I’ve come from and where I am now.”

He’s since moved to the Island to raise his five-year-old daughter, Skye-Anna.

He says “working 60 hours a week and not having enough at the end for cigarettes” drives him to make a better life for them as he said it’s pretty rough in south west London.

Carl has worked as a security guard for eight years and says he enjoys living on Sheppey.

“To the locals it might be a bit rough but compared to what I’m used to it’s really peaceful,” he added.

Already performing all around Kent, he said: “My main aim for my music is to encourage children to want to learn, because if they don’t want to then they aren’t going to.”

Carl launched his video with help from his friend, Victor Koroma.

The video is available to view on YouTube by searching Roomah Back Then.
