Youngsters showcased their horticultural skills during an open day.

Seashells Children and Families Centre invited visitors on Saturday to visit its Little Bloomers’ community garden, which started in March.

A celebration was held to mark the first batch of crops and community chef Mike Spackman made a vegetable curry using the first cauliflower grown there.

There were a variety of activities, including a flag competition, a lemonade stall and cakes made with fruits.

Local health visitor Andrea Green and parents Alex Toomer and Hayley Weller started up the community garden at the Rose Street, Sheerness, centre.

Marian Horton, a teacher who works with the centre, said: “It promotes healthy lifestyles through healthy eating and getting active. Gardening is very good exercise. Children love playing in the dirt and when it is allowed it is even better.”
